STRATEGIES TO PROMOTE LEARNING

María Montessori catalogued children as absorbent minds. According to her, during the first years of their lives, children connect innately with the environment. In response to this, Montessori based its pedagogy in the exploitation of the first years of life, and found in these periods sensitive stages for access to certain knowledge.

What has been the problem of traditional education according to Montessori? She says that traditional education teaches multiple concepts when the human being is no longer sensitive to them and therefore valuable moments for learning are wasted.

“Some of the examples of sensitivities periods to develop effective learning are: the sensitive period for language, which takes place from 0 to 3 years; then the sense of order, that develops from 2 to 3 years; the writing that comes from 3 to 4 years; and then the word, that leads to reading from 4 to 5 years” says psychologist Rubén Monsalve Guarín.
